Deep Banana
Blackout was born in 1995 but its members had already become
some of the most respected musicians of their idiom in the tri-state
area- a testament to why DBB is
one of the most successful bands to come out of the Northeast in more
than a decade. Their music is a combination of well crafted songwriting,
powerful improvisational skills, and a wide variety of stylistic influences
ranging from soul, funk and jazz, to Latin, rock, and psychedelia.
With rich vocals and fat horns, all driven by a masterful rhythm section,
the songs run the gamut, from lush and colorful, to plain low down
and dirty.
Several DBB members have notable
side projects. James Fuzz SanGiovanni,
released B'Gock!, in 1999, with
guests members of Deep Banana Blackout,
DJ Logic (Medeski Martin and Wood), and Michael
Ray (Sun Ra, Kool & the Gang). One of the leading young
jazz funk guitar players today, Fuzz has been featured in several
industry publications. DBB drummer
Eric Kalb and DBB
percussionist Johnny Durkin were
the rhythm section for jazz legend John
Scofield on his latest Verve release, Bump.
In January 2001, the band signed with Flying
Frog records founded by Allman Brothers'
band drummer, Butch Trucks. Their
upcoming album, "Feel The Peel,"
is expected to be released summer 2001. Prior records, "Live
in the Thousand Islands," (1997) and, "Rowdy
Duty,"(1999), a double
live album, have already sold a combined total of over 20,000.
