Ex-Soul Coughing
frontman Mike Doughty will take
his self-described "small rock" on the road in June and
July. Doughty will perform stripped-down acoustic renditions of select
Soul Coughing tunes, as well as
playing new material; titles of new songs include "Grey Ghost,"
"40 Grand In The Hole," "Im Still Drinking In
My Dreams" and "Busting Up A Starbucks." The one-month,
21-date run will include club shows in the western, midwestern and
southern U.S. Doughty will also perform August 5 at the Newport Folk
Festival in Newport, Rhode Island. See reverse for a complete list
of tour dates.
This will be Mike Doughty's third
solo tour since the breakup of Soul Coughing
in early 2000, and as with the previous two, he will tour by himself,
acting as musician, tour manager, merchandise salesman and driver.
"It's definitely fun being a one-man army of small rock,"
Doughty says. "After years of touring with two buses and a truck,
now being one guy in a rental car makes me feel like I'm actually
working out there, which is great."
On stage, Doughty is also going
it alone a noticeable change from his boisterous former band.
"There's an emotional center to the songs that isn't apparent
in big bombastic band arrangements, but totally shines when it's just
voice and guitar," he explains.
In addition to writing material for a solo album, Mike
Doughty has been working on a variety of other projects since
Soul Coughing disbanded in 2000. He provided vocals for dance
producer BTs hit single "Never Gonna Come Back Down,"
and recorded two songs with They Might
Be Giants for the duo's forthcoming album. Doughtys first
book of original poetry, Slanky,
is being published by Soft Skull Press
and will hit bookstores this fall. He continues to write columns and
features for the New York Press.
He also runs a bulletin board website at www.superspecialquestions.com;
he is an active participant in the conversations there, which cover
a broad range of music and pop culture |
