What is the Electroclash festival? In the Fall of 2001, Larry Tee put a collection together of his favorite New York 'Electro' artists like Fischerspooner, A.R.E. Weapons, W.I.T., Crossover, Soviet and Khan and started passing the collection around. To bring attention to this music that he was so excited about, Tee put together a festival to feature these artists and also included Peaches, Chicks on Speed, Adult, Ladytron DJ Team, Detroit Grand Pubas, DJ Assault and a dozen other artists. International media interest swelled following the success of the 5-day festival, and soon this diverse selection of artists were being called 'Electroclash', a term never intended for genre usage. Fast forward to 2003 when the music industry has had one of their worst years and the rise of the aforementioned artists is even more apparent. With the success of these pioneers and second-annual Electroclash Festival stars like Felix Da Housecat, 2 Many Djs, Erol Alkan, Mount Sims, Avenue D, My Robot Friend, Hungry Wives, Scissor Sisters and JoJo de Frek (London's Nag Nag Nag), a whole emerging generation of artists has been inspired with fresh ideas. After the 2002 festival, a 16-city tour featuring Peaches, Chicks on Speed, W.I.T., and Tracy & the Plastics went across North America on a sold out tour of rock clubs. Electroclash 2003, which is in planning now, is dedicated to the next wave of artists that will continue the evolution of performance-based electronic music! |
