The Great American Music Hall is proud to present 2 special solo acoustic performances by Elliott Smith. There are few tunesmiths who can tackle delicate issues -- heroin addiction, alcoholism, heartbreak and self-loathing -- with more sincerity and sensitivity than folk crooner Elliott Smith. Smith cut his teeth in the Portland, Ore.- based band Heatmiser, and released his debut solo album, "Roman Candle," in 1994. The emotionally raw album, originally recorded in Smith's basement on a four-track system, prompted comparisons to the dark, breathy broodings of the late Nick Drake. In 1997 Smith was propelled into the mainstream spotlight when his song "Miss Misery" was chosen as the theme song to Good Will Hunting, earning him an Academy Award nomination and an appearance at the Oscars. For one surreal moment, Smith got to share the stage sandwiched between Celine Dion and Trisha Yearwood." XO," Smith's fourth solo album and his debut on DreamWorks Records, was released in the summer of 1998 to positive reviews. "Figure 8" followed in 2000. Christina Cramer, Rollingstone.com |
