Formed in Manchester in 1976, The
Fall have occupied a unique position in the musical world for
the past 25 years. Central to their sound has always been the vocal
and lyrical style of band leader Mark E.
Smith, who has characterized the sound of over 25 albums and
27 different line-ups of the group and gone on to become a cult legend
in indie and alternative rock. Rarely tempted to celebrate the lighter
side of life, Smith uses dark humour and anger to illustrate the injustices
and hypocrisies of ordinary life, delivered in his inimitable sardonic
Manchester accent.
Early shows built up a strong following, and earned the band a series
of sessions on John Peel's Radio
programmes (The Fall are the DJ's all-time favourite band). By mid-1979
Smith was the only founding member left in the band, though the line-up
became relatively steady for the early 80s. Fans of The Fall, among
them many students, remained resolutely loyal, and early albums including
"Grotesque" and "Live
At The Witch Trials" sold well.
Although initially associated with the punk scene, these early albums
revealed an intellectual depth and willingness to experiment that
was missing in much of that genre, and The Fall earned critical respect
and widespread acceptance as "serious artists."
Artistic success and popularity look set to continue for The Fall
with the imminent release of their superb brand new album "Are
You Are Missing Winner," yet another fine release from
a band who has achieved fame without compromise, and whose artistic
integrity remains intact 25 years after their formation. |
