Described by the San Francisco Bay Guardian as "a
seasoned musical badass," Holcombe
Waller truly belies his 25 years with his inspired new album,
"EXTRAVAGANT GESTURE."
Owning a four-octave vocal range and a gift for deft songcraft and
incisive lyrics, this Bay Area native has created a deeply personal
and technically accomplished album that combines pop, rock, jazz and
folk elements within an inventive and ambitious song architecture.
Winning apt comparisons to such diverse artists as
Jeff Buckley, Ani DiFranco and Tori
Amos, Waller's voice and
style stand firmly on their own. Fiercely independent and immensely
talented as a musician, he belongs more appropriately to the lineage
of such left-of-center musical forebears as
Joni Mitchell and Van Morrison,
notable for bringing non-pop influences to bear on mainstream pop
and, in so doing, forging music and musical forms uniquely their own.
Waller's bold eclecticism and self-expression
give "Extravagant Gesture" its clout and promote a strong
empathy amongst his fans.
A classically trained pianist, Waller
has also studied jazz saxophone, guitar, MIDI instrument programming,
voice and visual arts. While in college, Holcombe
was awarded Best Male Soloist at the National Collegiate Acappella
Festival at Lincoln Center, sang in a nationally acclaimed a capella
group, and produced two albums for the New York-based band, Project
Nim, as well as his own debut release, Advertising Space, of which
HEAR Music writes: "Perfect pop vocals and a perfect record of
tangled existence." The meticulous production values on
Extravagant Gesture testify to Holcombe's
keen facility as a producer.
