Much like her larger-than-life persona, Judith
Owen's music isnt easily categorized. There are elements
of rock, pop, blues and soul. Shes a singer-songwriter who accompanies
herself at the piano in the tradition of such eclectic icons as Carole
King, Nina Simone and vintage Aretha
Franklin and while one might detect elements of each through
her music, she doesnt sound like any of those legendary women.
Her lyrics are personal and honest, observations and reflections on
life viewed with a bittersweet intensity. With typical British dry
wit, she describes herself as Elton
John meets Annie Lennox,
a nifty comparison that still falls short in giving musical definition
to just who Judith Owen really is.
One listen to Creatures of Habit,
her impressive debut album on Java/Capitol
Records, and its obvious why super producer and songwriter
Glen Ballard (hitmaker for such
artists as Alanis Morissette and
No Doubt among many others) picked
Judith as one of the first signings on his new Java
Records label.
