FUN! That’s what The Knitters are all about. A side band from some of the most prolific songwriters and musicians in America. Exene, John Doe, Dave Alvin, Jonny Ray Bartel, and DJ Bonebrake decided to put down all the pretense and pressure of their day jobs (X, the Blasters, the Red Devils) and just have some fun playing music.

They started by doing some benefit shows around town and had so much fun playing that they did some touring in the‘ 80’s and early‘ 90’s (in between touring with their respective bands, acting, movie sound tracks, recording with Johnny Cash and Mick Jagger). The audience had so much fun that they used to sit on the floor and sing every word with the band like a down-home sing-a-long. Don’t expect to sit on the floor these days, as there usually isn’t room.

Song selection is a sort of compilation from everyone’s record collection with a few originals just cause they can. Poor Little Criter on the Road was a song on a record that John and Exene bought up in Bakersfield and with the title they knew they had to have it. John always wanted to do a Merle Haggard song, so they did, and John and Dave wrote Wrecking Ball while watching the Super Bowl one year. So you can see that the Knitters is a sort of informal sort of stripped down let’s just have fun arrangement.

Bloodshot Records issued a tribute compilation CD for the Knitters including tracks from Robbie Fulks, the Old 97’s, Kelly Hogan and others. And the original Poor Little Criters on the Road has been re-released on CD. So if you’re a fan of X, the Blasters, the Red Devils, Exene, John, Dave, Jonny or DJ, or just a fan of fun music, the Knitters are going to make you really happy.
