Rebirth Brass Band

Mystery Machine Productions

Without a doubt, the ReBirth Brass Band is the king of the brass-band genre. The invigorating music that sounds so spontaneous is the combination of natural born talent, dedication, spirit, and a complete immersion in the New Orleans street tradition. The group maintains a proud tradition of funeral brass bands that play a slow dirge on the way to the cemetery, and then perform lively tunes on the way to the wake. Committed to upholding this institution while at the same time incorporating modern music into their show, the band blends everything from jazz-rock to bebop taking the party sound and mixing it with a spiritual side. Their energizing and spontaneous sound, signature brand of heavy funk, and youthful fun loving feel, has made them a hands-down favorite among the younger generation. ReBirth incorporates a wide range of genres into its sound; they have thrived by successfully integrating jazz history with funk and using infectious syncopation and rhythms absorbed from reggae, hip-hop and pop.

With their new release, Hot Venom, the ReBirth Brass Band pays a long-overdue homage to the streets that inspire them. The New York Times wrote of the band’s musical duality, "ReBirth can be precise whenever it wants to, but it’s more like a party than a machine, as minigroups form and dissolve at any moment."
